Yooperlite – Industrial CT Scan

CT Scan of Yooperlite

Yooperlite is a trademarked term from a Michigan native who discovered that certain rocks glow under UV light. These are syenite rocks rich with fluorescent sodalite. Sodalite is what fluoresces under the light.

We wanted to see what this mix of materials looks like using industrial CT scanning.

Multi Material Segmentation

This scan was performed at 6 micron resolution. A variety of filters and techniques were applied during post-processing to enhance imaging. The materials vary in density significantly which made imaging and segmenting the rock quite easy. Sodalite is the lowest density material in this specimen.

The image shows a transition from exterior, to medium density material content, to high density content with a wall thickness measurement applied.
